How to Become an Actor/Actress – Exclusive Interview with Canadian Film and TV Star Theresa Longo

Recently a group of high school students interviewed Canadian Actress Theresa Longo regarding the path to becoming an actress!

Theresa Longo explains How to Become an Actress/Actor in this interview:

1. How did you get into acting?

(Theresa): Seven years ago a friend of mine submitted us for a TV show called “Instant Beauty Pageant” which aired on E! Entertainment Network. We went for the audition about an hour away from home and landed the role together. I have been attending auditions with success ever since!

 I studied business administration at Trent University in Peterborough Ontario, Canada. An acting career requires marketing ability, strategic marketing skills, public relations considerations, as well as experience in advertising and social media management. Currently I manage myself with the help of multiple agents working for me. I frequently update my actress skills on a regular basis with course work and collaboration with other actors and mentors.

Daily I check emails, converse with brands who I represent (Protein companies, vitamin companies, health food companies, car companies). Weekly I apply to work with affiliates and agencies.  I respond to individual requests, arrange photo shoots, update my website at www.theresalongo.com, submit for auditions, practice and memorize lines, cast ladies and actresses for future event bookings, sometimes train clients (fitness) and update my social media on several platforms. You can find my profile on IMDB. I submit to every audition. Even if I think it isn’t “the perfect part for me,”. Submitting for all your auditions gives practice and exposure to casting directors. It is important to make a positive impression on producers, directors and casting directors. In my spare time I am writing a film with fellow talented actor Brian Quintero. I work on music a lot, writing, producing and singing vocals on collaborations and original songs.

As well as continually auditioning for voice and self-tape auditions, I also create content with original score.

  The biggest challenge is keeping a steady stream of income! Often as an actress I have to juggle several jobs and diversify. I am an investor,  content creator, a fitness trainer, a writer, a blogger, brand ambassador, social media manager and more. I have to have several jobs in order to support having an office in Toronto as well as travel. Often I live minimally and avoid too many expenses.  When I work independently on events and jobs, it can take up to 60 or even 90 days to get paid. Sometimes I never know when my cheque will arrive. At times I have waited months and even years for repayment for work already finished. They say the only thing harder than becoming an actress is getting paid to be an actress 😉 !

Take care of your image. Be careful what you post online. Take great care to present yourself as a classy, polished, professional individual. I am very meticulous about my image online. Google yourself to see what your search results are. Make sure to save your photos with an appropriate title so that Google and other search engines will find you faster. For example: Saving a photo of myself with the name “Actress-Theresa-Longo.JPG” will yield far better search results in search engines than leaving photos to have an assigned name ie “DSL9854-34.JPG”. Additionally, I only post positive social media updates. I never complain and I am always happy. Even if something goes differently than I expected, I always try to find the positives and look on the bright side. I always look around and think of all the things I am so lucky to have. I feel gratitude on a regular basis daily. I try to make a list of 100 things I am grateful for often. Keep a perfected, easy to read actor / actress resume. Always have updated head shots (within the last 6 months).  Be willing to invest a bit of money in your career, photos, and marketing yourself as a business entity.
