How is it to Work at a Casino?

By September 27, 2018November 27th, 2018Uncategorized

The idea of working at a casino is fun but the job isn’t meant for everyone. You might probably be the favourite dealer in your family and love making people play games, however, you need to have what it takes to work at a casino if you want to secure a job and get hired.

When you start searching for a job, you look for the top casinos in your city, their working environment, the vacancies, and the salaries offered. But before you take a look at the bigger picture, it is important to understand whether you will be able to qualify for the job and if you do match the minimum requirements for working in the gaming industry:

Your Age

The minimum age requirements to qualify for a casino job is 18. Some casinos have stricter rules and you will need to be 21 years of age. Since the age requirements for every casino is different, depending on their location, job seekers must check with the establishment before sending their application.

Educational Qualification

Casinos generally hire candidates who have completed high school education or GED. For some positions, educational requirements may be different and specialized skills may be mentioned in the job posting. For instance, if you wish to apply for the job of a dealer, you will be required to have trained at a Dealing/Gaming school. Similarly, for the position of a Gaming Manager, you need to have a bachelor’s degree in business, finance or hospitality related industry. Some of the other skills that are focused upon include mathematical skills, money management experience, customer communication, and patience.

Background Check

The amount of money handled at casinos is large and keeping the same in mind, you need to pass a thorough background check. The casino industry is not limited to Las Vegas and the revenue numbers even at the local level are significant. This necessitates the need for casinos to be very cautious with employee records. The background check will include a character record check and a drug test. Gambling establishments do not accept candidates who indulge in drug and felonies use or have any criminal records.

License

Casino workers, involved in any kind of role at the casino, need to obtain a license from the state regulatory agency. This agency will be different from one state to another but is generally the gaming commission or the state casino central board. The application process to receive a license requires the submission of a few forms, a processing fee, and photo identification. A license can be obtained only by those who have cleared the background check. In case your background check is not clean, you will not be able to obtain a license.

The Working Environment

Once you have qualified for a job at the casino, you need to understand the environment you can expect at your organization. Generally, casinos have a fast-paced work environment with a lot of noise from slot machines, music consoles, and card tables. If you choose to work as a card game dealer, your shift will be physically demanding. You must carefully think about these aspects and apply for the position of a casino worker only if you feel that you will be able to fit in such an environment.
