This post finds me posting personal memories from the Miss Italia Nel Mondo Competition which took place in Reggio, Calabria in June 2011. Miss Italia Nel Mondo or Miss Italy in the World is an Italian beauty pageant for women of Italian heritage which has been held since 1991. After taking the North American crown I was sent to Italy to represent our country in the world finals.
Three weeks into pageant preparations we spent several hours a day in rehearsal and dance practice. Did I mention the food? Incredible food everywhere. Despite all the dancing, I gained about 5 pounds every week I was in Italy – and I would do it again in a heart beat

For almost one week I toured Sicily, including Palermo. (My Italian family originated in Palermo Sicily!) After a stay in Sicily I travelled to Reggio, Calabria where Miss Italia Nel Mondo ultimately took place. For 2 weeks we traveled, visited pageant sponsors, completed press tours, and took in the sights and sounds of Calabria. I loved my stay in Italy. Food was unbelievable.
This is when we were walking to meet Italian Prime Ministers and government officials. We had our own security detail, including helicopters!
